Recognition at last for descendants of African warriors who served under the Dutch flag in the Dutch East Indies. Including 94-year-old Daniël Cordus, survivor of forced labour on the Burma Railway.
The 94-year-old Daniël Cordus, born in the Dutch East Indies, is the grandson of an African warrior who was recruited in 1837 for the Royal Dutch East-Indian Army (KNIL). 'Belanda hitam', black Dutchmen, these African KNIL soldiers were called. Their loyalty to the Dutch throne had repercussions: during the Japanese occupation, they were set to work as forced labourers. It took more than seventy years before their sacrifices were acknowledged. Griselda Molemans previously wrote a book on the subject.
This film is part of the Golden Calf Competition, but is not screened at NFF 2018.
