Is a toko simply a shop where you can buy exotic goods? Or is it also a place where cultural heritage gets passed down, where communities come together and share memories?
What stands to be lost as the toko slowly disappears from Dutch streets, in a society that keeps changing? That's the starting point of this visual graduation essay, which delves into the cultural significance of tokos in Rotterdam and The Hague through observation, interviews and the maker's own personal reflections. These shops, selling tropical produce, have for years served as gathering places for people from the Indo, Moluccan and Caribbean communities, among others. Perhaps they're something more than just a 'shop' after all?
