De pijnbank is about the jealousy and intrigues in a bank that has recently merged. The new bank manager tries to get rid of two difficult bank employees by playing them off against each other deviously. Looking for weak links, acquired privileges are withdrawn and one employee is set to catch the other one committing fraud. The pace is slowly increased. Then an ex-customer (Paul de Leeuw) is involved, a vengeful man who has still not come to terms with a bankruptcy from the distant past. The script of De pijnbank was written by cabaret artist and playwright Justus van Oel.
