This thriller, adapted from Tim Krabbé's novel, tells the story of the 43-year-old geologist Egon Wagter, who hands over a suitcase with heroin to a courier in Asia. What precedes this transfer becomes clear in different flashbacks, leaping in time. At the age of 14, at a holiday camp in the Belgian Ardennes, Egon falls in love with Marjoke, who like him is very fond of stones. However, their love is thwarted by Egon's pal Axel, a boy who is able to cunningly manipulate the people around him and whose life later on keeps interwoven with Egon's. When Egon meets his 'friend' again during his geology studies, Axel has grown from a drug courier into a professional swindler. Just the skill that Egon needs when he lacks the money to fulfil his dream of exploring in Peru.
