Documentary about the new life of film-maker Meral Uslu's sister aged 23. Gunay Uslu, a student born in Haarlem of Turkish parents, gave up her life in Holland for an uncertain future in Eastern Turkey after her marriage to holiday romance Mehmet. At the request of her sister Meral she recorded her experiences after arriving in her new home on video8. In De beginnende Turk (The Starting Turk) we see these video letters and Gunay's doubts, homesickness and problems adapting. The documentary provides an insight into the feelings of someone who turns over a new leaf, while also sketching an intimate picture of a world unknown to many.
