In his poems, the Hindu poet and doctor Jit Narain describes his ancestors' migration from India to Suriname. His grandparents' fate and his own migration from Suriname to the Netherlands and back to Suriname in the early nineties are key themes in his work. In Suriname, he settled in the Saramacca district as a doctor and a farmer. In the film De as van de herinnering, Jit Narian is followed in his practice with attached outpatient clinic and while cultivating his land. These scenes are alternated with Narain's poems, set to music and sang by himself, which articulate his and his forebears' uprootedness.
