Feature film basedf on six-part television series after Hella Haasse's historic novel Mrs Bentinck or Vital Choices. Film and series tell the true story of Charlotte Sophie von Aldenburg (1715-1800), a noble German girl who is married off by her father to a diplomat in The Hague, Willem Bentinck. Only a few years later the marriage is on the rocks. The temperamental countess cherishes an affection for the flamboyant husband of her cousin. When their affair becomes known, this is not without consequences. Charlotte Sophie Bentinck is portrayed in the series as a wilful woman who continues to fight for a freer life, even though she knows better.
