Cafard

Director: Jan Bultheel
August 1914. While Jean Lemarin is away winning the World Wrestling Championships in Buenos Aires, his daughter is raped by German soldiers at home in Ostend. The Belgian grappler swears revenge and with his coach and young nephew, he enrols in a prestigious corps that moves to the Eastern front in their armoured cars. Author’s film in animation form, in which the protagonist unintentionally ends up in a dramatic odyssey around the world. In a sober animation style and in minimalistic but essential scenes, Jean’s romantic 19th-century worldview irrevocably collapses.
