Poetic biopic about South-African poet Ingrid Jonker, who in her turbulent life fought the demons of liquor and depression and her arduous relations with men, including her authoritarian father.

The sensitive, liberated South-African poet Ingrid Jonker (Carice van Houten) is a very gifted author suffering from depressions. Her life is substantially influenced by two men: love of her life Jack Cope (Liam Cunningham), a writer she has a passionate affair with, and her tyrannical, ultraconservative father (Rutger Hauer), a right-wing minister in the Apartheid regime. Paula van der Oest’s international biopic Black Butterflies clinched the Golden Calf for Best Film in 2011. The jury lauded the movie for being 'a perfect mix of national and international expertise, skills and talents'.
