Following Desi Bouterse’s conviction, the Surinamese people fail to heal their country, documentary filmmaker Ananta Khemradj observes. Would talking to the ex-dictator help, or would it backfire?
With the conviction of ex-president Desi Bouterse, Suriname seemed to have turned a dark page of its history. But this did not happen, filmmaker Ananta Khemradj (32) observes. On the contrary, the verdict causes discord within the Surinamese community, both in Suriname and the Netherlands. Conspiracy theories about the attempted coup in 1982 keep going around. Wondering how the Surinamese nation can heal, Khemradj discusses the topic with her compatriots. Should Khemradj go and talk to Bouterse himself, too, or would that give him an unwanted stage?
