Poetical, associative documentary critically observes how we as Europeans commemorate, (re)present and interpret our recent, dark history. The film shows landscapes, people and objects history has left its traces on. For example, Battles shows how bunkers are reused as cowsheds in Albania, how forgotten bombs are set off in a deserted amusement park in Belgium, and how captivity under the Soviet regime is offered as a tourist attraction in Latvia.
