Hitchcock's echo resounds throughout Verhoeven's controversial erotic thriller about a detective investigating the gruesome assassination of a pop star. The trail leads to the victim's girlfriend, a mysterious writer who describes the murder in detail in her novel. Spellbound by the case and by the manipulative temptress, the officer gets entangled in a wild sexual relationship and threatens to fall into a dangerous trap. The box-office hit caused quite an uproar in the United States, because the story was allegedly sexist, brutal and homophobic.
