Bagasi - wat we meedragen

Director: Emma Lesuis
Emma's grandparents lived in Suriname. A suitcase full of old archival material stirs up painful memories of matters long kept silent.
Filmmaker Emma Lesuis's father-in-law gives her a suitcase belonging to his grandfather, Maarten de Niet, the former acting governor of Suriname. With his archive, she travels to Suriname. What was De Niet's involvement in the arrests of Anton de Kom and Louis Doedel? What do these stories and images stir up in the people around Emma, including her own mother, who grew up in a time when her Surinamese roots had to be denied? And how must she herself come to terms with this painful and complex legacy, one she is also passing on to her own children?
