In the eighties, Ruud Monster made Along the Road, an impressive series of observations of the Dutch landscape, which struck the eye with its original photography. Twenty years later, he presents a new episode in the series, AONG - The Railroad. This time, the camera and microphone register the chaos around a railway in Indonesia. Directly beside the rails, all sorts of structures betray a feverish activity. On the adjacent road, throbbing cars, scooters and buses drive past. A woman in flip-flops hesitates before crossing the road. A chicken trips resolutely along the rails. A small monkey rattles his chain. Sitting on a rail, a man plays with his toes. A woman takes care of her child. Young men carry a heavy load on their shoulders. A full train passes by, passengers in the open doors. Then, a boy starts singing the praises of the twinkling stars, accompanied by a guitar player. He asks if his love will be requited. His audience is enthusiastic.
