Amsterdam 1652 | De Handen van de Stad

Director: Nienke Huitenga Broeren
Step into an intimate encounter with 17th-century Amsterdam. Seen through the eyes of three ‘ordinary’ Amsterdammers, the city unfolds quite differently from the version in the history books.
In this VR group experience, you don’t just observe the city, you become part of it. Guided by three remarkable 'guides' in 1652: a whaler, a printer, and a freed Black craftswoman. When the old Town Hall goes up in flames, their paths cross, and the fire sets them in motion. So, not the big names from history books, but ordinary people who, until now, were barely registered as a footnote in history. On this seemingly ordinary day, you'll discover how the dreams and hands of ordinary people shape a city. Selected in competition for the prestigious Venice Immersive 2026.
