Documentary about the way in which the inhabitants of the barren Andes Mountains in Northern Chile cope with sudden death. On the spot where someone has died, an altar is set up where visitors can ask the `animita' for help and inspiration. If the desires are met, the deceased is worshipped as a saint. The film shows three sudden deaths and the animita which resulted. The relatives act and think as if their loved ones are still alive. They provide evidence of a world of the dead while at the same time, the dead manifest the living.
