Back to the future with media archaeologist Jacco Gardner. In Alterity, a music-driven installation, Gardner combines creative machines and software from the 1980s with modern AI agents, for an audiovisual trip, kicked off by a live performance.
Musician, producer and composer Jacco Gardner has built an immersive installation using hardware from the 1980s, including a Macintosh SE, an Atari ST light synthesiser, video mixers from the early days of the club scene, and other obsolete yet nonetheless creative machines. Once extensions of human creativity, in combination with contemporary AI agents they now acquire a voice of their own. Does an old dream become reality?
In Alterity, a voice-over provides live commentary on an era in which we're pulled back and forth between the Pygmalion myth, falling in love with our own invention, and the Frankenstein complex, in which we fear our own creations.
