Can the discovery of a single letter call into question everything we thought we knew about the canonical readymade work Fountain (1917)? This documentary, in the form of a readymade itself, investigates it.
Was it in actual fact Marcel Duchamp who in 1917 submitted a urinal to an exhibition, thus sparking a revolution in the art world? In the playful documentary Alreadymade, filmmaker Barbara Visser calls originality, authorship and identity into question, just like the artwork Fountain, claimed by Duchamp, did a century ago. Voices ascribing the work to Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven attract growing attention. Is this because historically many things have to be rectified with respect to female contributions to art? Or is it wishful thinking, after all?
