Documentary following the first team of Ajax during their tragic centenary jubilee season 1999-2000.
In Ajax - Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the opening film of the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam 2000, Roel van Dalen interweaves three narrative threads. He follows the first team during their tragic centenary jubilee season 1999-2000 and demonstrates to what extent Ajax is run like a company behind the scenes. At the same time, he looks at the junior teams, where hopeful children learn at a very young age how tough the road to the top is. Thirdly, Van Dalen visits the soccer school that Ajax set up in Ghana, and where Ajax scouts search young talents to take back to the polder. The colonial attitude of the scouts results in a few embarrassing scenes, like when the age of the players, who are standing in a row, has to be assessed.
