In search of inspiration for her next book, comic artist Aimée de Jong travels to Lesbos, where she translates refugees' stories into poignant drawings.
The Greek island of Lesbos has long ceased to be an idyllic holiday destination, and has instead become the front line of strict European refugee policy. In recent years, hundreds of displaced people have reached the island. But many also drowned, their bodies washing up on the same beaches where European tourists relax. Acclaimed comic artist Aimée de Jong travels to Lesbos in search of inspiration for her new book about the fictional Syrian boy Samir. She is confronted with moving personal stories, to which she must relate not only as an artist, but also as a human being. Cinematic imagery and powerful drawings set against the backdrop of a forgotten humanitarian crisis.
