This surrealist tale from the Caribbean, which pays no heed to traditional forms of storytelling, can rightly be called a dream debut. A dream world reveals itself through abstraction, in which land, sound and memory merge into a poetic echo.
The experimental ADRIFT WAK LEU (the latter meaning 'to look far away' in Papiamento) follows a girl in a surrealist daydream. Fittingly for a dream, the filmmaker opts for a non-linear narrative form for a coming-of-age story of watchfulness within the dream world. This debut film is one of the first productions to see the light of day thanks to Studio Caribe, a programme that supports filmmakers from the Dutch Caribbean islands in the development and realisation of their own film projects.
