While his divorced parents are penniless, eight-year-old red-haired rascal Giovanni always manages to wangle things. He prefers to spend the 'loot' immediately in the shopping mall, on candy or DVDs. Riches make no man happy, people say, but he knows better. Giovanni has to stand on his own two feet very early, partly because his parents do not set many rules. His father and mother live close to each other in an underprivileged Amsterdam neighbourhood. He lives with his father, sleeping in the living room. They watch violent movies till late at night - Giovanni particularly likes the ones with gangster rapper 50 Cent - while his father drinks beer and smokes joints. At school, Giovanni is often too tired to pay attention. Without giving comment or asking questions, directors Ester Gould and Sarah Sylbing follow the disarming, vigorous boy when foraging on the street or on his birthday, where the chaos in his domestic live becomes really apparent.
