In Dance Out of Pattern (DOOP), Luna Maurer explores the relationship between humans, dance, and artificial intelligence. We often think of AI as a tool that takes over human tasks, but Maurer instead uses this technology as a creative collaborator. With DOOP, she investigates whether digital technology can push her towards unusual, unfamiliar ways of moving — and, in doing so, tell different kinds of stories.
The machine now acts as her co-choreographer and improvisation partner: she gives it a prompt, a character description or a task, and from there, an exchange takes shape. On the dance floor, Maurer then balances between listening, responding, and improvising. For Maurer, the research isn't about whether AI is smarter than humans, but about what becomes possible in the encounter between a body and a bodiless machine — it's precisely in that friction that beautiful things emerge: new movements, new stories, new ways of thinking.

Dance Out of Pattern shows that technology can do more than just speed up processes; it can also create space for imagination, doubt, and creativity. Maurer uses her own body as a research instrument, revealing that the meaning of AI lies not in perfection or control, but in the unexpected interaction between human and machine. In doing so, Dance Out of Pattern invites us to rethink what makes us human.
