For this special live recording of LAB111’s Celebrating Cinema podcast at NFF, we bring together three people at different points on that journey: director Mees Peijnenburg, whose new feature A Family competes for the Gouden Kalf this year; Leontine Petit, CEO and producer at Lemming Film and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; and actor Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, whose career already moves between Dutch and international productions.
Together, they look at what it takes to move beyond the Dutch film industry, what makes that difficult, and whether the Netherlands can create more space for its filmmakers to think internationally without simply leaving home.
About Celebrating Cinema
Celebrating Cinema is Amsterdam’s LAB111 film podcast on the cinema that matters. From cult classics and restorations to today’s most-talked-about releases, film journalist Laura Gommans, film critic Hugo Emmerzael, filmmaker Kiriko Mechanicus and film programmer Tom Ooms take turns asking what films tell us about ourselves, our culture and the times we live in.
Rooted in the Netherlands' film community but international in outlook, Celebrating Cinema brings voices and perspectives from Dutch film culture into a wider conversation about cinema—championing the filmmakers, critics, programmers and ideas shaping how we watch and think about film today.
