In the mid-17th century, the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands is in heavy weather. After the demise of the old admiral Maarten Tromp, Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt appoints his successor: Michiel de Ruyter. The young and ambitious De Ruyter not only reveals himself as a brilliant strategist in the war against the English, but also gets entangled in some political jousting at home. The life of the most famous naval hero in Dutch history is visualised in an epic adventure movie full of spectacular sea battles and domestic scenes.
