Documentary about Luciano Berio's composition Sinfonia. The film is directed at the third part of the composition, that comprises the several musical quotes from composers including Mahler, Stravinsky, Boulez, Schönberg and Stockhausen. As Berio quotes the composers, so does filmmaker Scheffer using several quotes from his own films. The film quotes are linked by images of a river, the same river that was also used by Berio as a link in his composition; a river that flows through a continuously changing landscape, occasionally disappearing from sight and finally reappearing entirely transformed. The film also includes shots of rehearsals, interviews and orchestral performances.
