Due to booze and drugs, Matthijs, filmmaker Joey Benistant’s best friend, died at 27. In conversations with childhood friends and Matthijs' former girlfriend, Benistant examines what it is like to be friends with someone who is so self- destructive.
As early as in secondary school, Joey Benistant (32) filmed his Groningen-based clan of friends, back then for Jackass-like videos. But while initially everything revolves around a good laugh, in the following years Joey sees his best friend Matthijs go downhill due to excessive use of booze and drugs. While the rest of the group find their way in life, Matthijs is going precisely in the opposite direction. Benistant keeps visiting his friend and filming him, also in his darkest moments. What is it like to be best friends with someone who has a self-destructive mindset? How do his other friends and his former girlfriend look back on this?
