The title is an ironic reference to the image of Sodom and Gomorrah that foreign visitors tend to have of the Dutch capital. The tower of Babel is, in this case, the steeple of Amsterdam's Westerkerk and in the five parts of this film it plays four supporting roles and one leading part. The stories are amorous babble: there are Italian, South African, German, Friesian and French parts. Cultural disruptions of communication in summery Amsterdam, focusing on love and sex in which people are confronted with specific Amsterdam customs, be it as inhabitants or visitors. Babylon was shot on a small budget and with the aid of friends and acquaintances.
