During this talk we explore the work and methods of independent filmmakers filmmakers, who see industry systems not as boundaries but as starting points. We talk to makers who, each in their own way, have claimed space in an industry that has not always seemed to be intended for them. What drives them? What walls did they run into - and how did they demolish them single-handedly? Together, they offer keen insights, personal experiences and concrete examples of how independent makers are creating space within an often closed industry. The speakers each bring their unique experience and vision of independent filmmaking.
In her opening speech, Katja Meier shares how, together with Delia Mayer through Zenka Films, she broke barriers for women over 50 and produced stories that, according to traditional systems, would have “no target audience.” Afterward, the other speakers join in a panel discussion. Digna Sinke demonstrates how individuality and versatility can enable a long and meaningful career – from fiction to documentary and everything in between – and inspires with her example of authentic authorship. Jonathan de Jong discusses the challenges and creative solutions involved in making and distributing his documentary Human Forever, and how perseverance and unorthodox choices lead to international success. Manoushka Zeegelaar Breeveld highlights the role of creators as drivers of systemic change, and how they bring stories to screen and stage on multiple levels to promote inclusivity and diversity.
