NFF Focustalk: Community, Collective and Archive

How can collective creation transform the present by repositioning the past and reimagining the future?

In this panel discussion, creative collectives share their vision on how we can work and create together. By developing new forms of collaboration and going beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, these collectives expand our idea of what the film industry can look like. They search for new visual languages. Here, the use of archives plays an important role: existing images and material are revisited, reused and deployed to highlight underexposed stories and recall forgotten histories.

Best known as a streetwear brand, The New Originals (TNO) has since expanded to support and collaborate with creative makers, organising festivals, concerts, art installations and now short films. In the same vein, Sankofa Archives was started, a platform that celebrates and highlights youth culture in music, film, fashion and more. Together with Eben Badu and Thaniel Owusu Agyemang, we discuss what it means to work as communities and with communities, how underrepresented makers can be supported, and what role archival material and film has come to play in their projects.

We continue with speaking to the makers behind Beyond Walls and Werker Collective. For these collectives, film has become part of their research on social themes and collective history. Together, we explore how collective creation, combined with archival material, can help make forgotten or erased stories visible and use moving image as a tool for social change.

In collaboration with the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision.
