You can't be what you can't see. Only 10.3% of Dutch film and television productions between 2011 and 2020 were shot by a female Director of Photography (DoP). Discover the iconic women behind the camera at this exhibition from 26 Sept to 3 Oct at the Louis Hartlooper Complex.
Research by Utrecht University, commissioned by Stichting Vrouwen in Beeld and Netherlands Society for Cinematographers (NSC), provides insight into the causes of their underexposed position. The perception that a DoP is a profession for men is partially perpetuated by stubborn assumptions, and because camerawomen get fewer opportunities and have little visibility.
Photographer Anneloes Pabbruwee was commissioned by NSC and Vrouwen in Beeld to make photographic portraits of Dutch camerawomen. These can now be seen in the Louis Hartlooper Complex in the photo exhibition: Camera Women in the Picture (Cameravrouwen in Beeld). With this exhibition, they want to increase the visibility of female DoPs in the audiovisual sector and inspire other (young) women to choose this profession. Because: what she can do, I can do too.
