Documentary about Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal (1908-2005), made to mark his 85th birthday on 31 December 1993. For almost fifty years, Simon Wiesenthal has worked with unparalleled diligence and perseverence in tracking down Nazi war criminals and bringing them to justice. For many people, Wiesenthal was a living legend and a symbol of the search for justice. Wiesenthal was a bridge between a dramatic past and a worrying present. His latest activities - not know to all - involved setting up a network to warn of racism and neo-Nazism in Europe. The documentary Vrijheid is geen geschenk van de hemel focuses on the importance of Wiesenthal's work for the then present generation. Alongside talks with Wiesenthal, the film comprises archive footage and topical shots of Europe today.
