When Veerle Baetens, who makes her directing debut with Het Smelt, first read Lize Spit’s novel, she was deeply impressed by Eva’s solitude. The grown-up Eva (Charlotte De Bruyne) is a vulnerable person who in the midst of winter, and with a telling block of ice in her car, decides to confront the tormentors of her childhood. Young Eva (Rosa Marchant) was neglected by her parents and her attempts to make friends as a thirteen-year old left deep scars. A poignant coming-of-age story.
