NFF Focustalk: What Silence Says

The unknown force in storytelling. In this NFF Focustalk, British Academy Award winner Nina Hartstone takes the audience into the invisible language of film sound, where breath, silence and timing create emotion and meaning. Sound touches us without us realizing it and adds an extra dimension to storytelling.

Nina Hartstone – known for films such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Wuthering Heights and Saltburn – shows us how sound design goes beyond effects and music: it is the subtle art of what remains unsaid. A held breath, a fraction of silence before a word, the timing of a sigh. These are the building blocks that bring characters to life and touch audiences without them knowing it.

Discover how to move beyond the obvious and design sound that feels intimate and unforgettable. Nina shares her approach and insights from a career in which speech and silence are just as meaningful as image.
