MOHAMMED & PAUL - Once upon a time in Tangier

Director: Nordin Lasfar
The complex friendship between illiterate storyteller Mohammed Mrabet and author Paul Bowles is traced through archive material, interviews and AI-generated imagery. But who really owns their beloved stories?
In this documentary, filmmaker Nordin Lasfar examines the life of celebrated storyteller Mohammed Mrabet, the only illiterate person in the world with fourteen books to his name. Renowned writer Paul Bowles put Mrabet's imaginative stories to paper and had them published. What followed was a complex friendship between Bowles and Mrabet, shaped by colonial inequality and racism. Through archive material, interviews and creative AI imagery, this documentary reflects on old Morocco and the question of who owns a story.
