Can you break the stereotypical image of the Roma and Sinti with a radical retelling of the opera Carmen? A theatre-maker attempts to do just that, but his own heritage brings complications of its own.
Theatre director Giovanni Brand wants to put a new spin on the world-famous opera Carmen. Brand is drawn to the iconic role of Carmen, but simultaneously struggles with the archetypal image of the Romani woman portrayed in the opera. To break down that stereotype, Brand (who comes from a Romani family himself) decides to play Carmen himself. Gradually, he is confronted with his background and the long journey he has made from the caravan site to the theatre. Where does he actually belong?
