Under the umbrella of “New Dutch” – a cheeky reference to the annual Dutch tradition of the year’s first batch of herring – a curated selection of the most exciting new projects in Dutch fiction, documentary, animation and interactive is presented to our international network. These projects – ranging in status from advanced script stage to post-production – receive tailor-made development programmes to best accommodate their individual goals and wishes, and to prepare them for a life far beyond the borders of the Netherlands.
Previous editions of New Dutch have included IN ALASKA by Jaap van Heusden and producer IJswater Films, which went on to be selected for Cannes L’Atelier and “Ontario Creates” at Toronto International Film Festival; I DON’T WANNA DANCE by Flynn von Kleist and producer The Rogues, which won the 2019 The Intermission Post-Production Award; BLOODY MARIE by Guido van Driel and producer Family Affair Films, which has been distributed in the US by Uncork’d Entertainment; and LA ÚLTIMA PRIMAVERA (formerly known as EL AZUL BAJO SUS PIES) by Isabel Muruzábal Lamberti and producer IJswater Films, which has recently been picked up for distribution by Cinemien.
The 2021 Lab begins over the course of August 2021. The HFM festival programme will be from Thursday September 30 to Saturday October 2, 2021.

HFM projects programme
The programme is shaped like a multiple-week creative lab. It consists of plenary workshops, one-to-one expert meetings, and other events geared towards your project’s creative deepening and marketplace potential. It starts ahead of the actual film festival and HFM, and its duration and focus are different depending on the scheme the project has been selected for. BoostNL, Stories & Beyond and New Dutch are part of the HFM projects programme.
