As a child you can play all day long: playing house, building huts, playing soccer in the street. But when you are an adult? You can too! Or is it a little odd: a grownup man in knight’s armour?
The Dutch historian Johan Huizinga is one of the most influential writers on the play element in culture. His Homo Ludens from 1938 is read to this day, to put the concepts of play in words. In her equally playful documentary, director Sanne Rovers captures the attraction of play in moving images. She quotes Huizinga, but then abandons all theory to simply show playing adults. In a sweeping, poetic montage, all their forms of play blend into a dance of man playing.
