Ons moederland is a portrait of Constant Kusters, a devoted family man and the figurehead of the far-right Nederlandse Volks Unie. But this film is not just about him; it is about all of us. About where we come from and where we want to go as a society.
Constant Kusters is the controversial political leader of the extreme right Nederlandse Volks Unie. Portraying his daily life, Ons moederland paints a picture of Dutch society and its attitude towards ‘the stranger’ through the centuries. Incorporating historical Dutch archive footage and intimate scenes in the far-right milieu, this documentary shows a politician who is pleased to see that his ideas penetrate the establishment ever further. In the process, the film holds up a mirror to the viewer. To what extent is our national history a breeding ground for the current fear of newcomers?
