Fictional frame story about the fortunes of the existing Spanish family Gabarre Mendoza. The family lives in ‘La Cañada Real’, a slum on the edge of Madrid that is about to be demolished. The already underprivileged dwellers are forced to abandon their self-built houses, because the land they live on has been sold. Every member of the Gabarre Mendoza family individually struggles with the imminent transition in their lives.
