As a filmmaker, Rolf Orthel (The Hague, 1936) used to combine direction and production. He and his filmmaking contemporaries had never heard of loglines or premises. Orthel talks about his passion for cinema, about filmmaking then and now and about the importance of teaching. And he especially makes a plea for filmmaking as a quest; an adventure without any stringent scripts or predetermined results. In passing, a piece of (Dutch) cinema history files past in the form of unique archive footage, but the film also keeps an eye on current events.
