Marie Wankelmut, German drunkard and cartoonist in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, suffers from writer's block and a talent forcreating conflicts. When things get out of hand at the neighbours, she has to drastically shift gears in this melancholy tragicomedy.
Successful in a distant past, cartoonist Marie Wankelmut has been living in Amsterdam’s Red Light District for twenty years. She lacks inspiration and is plagued by guilt towards her deceased mother. Marie alternately drinks and frets, creating less and less. Growing isolation, an ever messier life and dipsomania land her in one conflict after another. Until a horrible event at her next door neighbours sobers her up. Although the film, the characters and the creator (apart from a director, Guido van Driel is a cartoonist himself) suggest otherwise, this story is not based on a cartoon.
