Three-part drama series on the politician Ed van Thijn and the IRT affair, based on his diary. It is a story about conflicts between friendship, ideals and self-interest in politics.
Three-part drama series inspired by the diary written by the politician Ed van Thijn (played by Huub Stapel). In 1993 the former mayor of Amsterdam was involved in dismantling the IRT - the Interregional Detective Team - by his commissioner of police and friend Eric Nordholt. Soon afterwards, his party asked him to replace the late Ien Dales as Minister of the Interior. In this function, Van Thijn was responsible for investigating the IRT affair and hence also his own work as mayor. After only a few months he was sacked by parliament, alongside Minster of Justice Ernst Hirsch Balin. As well as reconstructing the IRT Affair, Retour Den Haag is above all a dramatised story about conflicts between friendship, ideals and self-interest in politics.
