The second feature film by Fons Rademakers is a tragicomedy about three Amsterdam families that come up against a generation gap during the traditional Dutch feast of St. Nicolas, when the adults behave like children. The film reflects the character of the late fifties, when children increasingly rebelled against parental authority. That Joyous Eve... won a Silver Bear at the 1961 Berlin Film Festival.
