De omweg is a partly autobiographical road movie about Joanna (28). After ending her relationship Joanna is starting a new life. She takes a job in a library and goes to the theatre in the evenings. There she becomes intrigued by the texts of the Austrian playwright Thomas Bernard (1931-1989). His texts would appear to fit seamlessly into her life. When Joanna is invited by a man she meets in a library to get her strength back in his house in the French Pyrenees, she buys a red Volvo Amazon and sets off. On her way to the South of France, she makes a detour through Austria and visits her favourite writer. While the encounter with the writer living as a hermit is disappointing, she settles down to live with him for six months.
