Portrait of the Jewish historian Saul Friedländer, one of the leading historians and scientists in the field of Nazism and the Jewish genocide.
Portrait of the Jewish historian Saul Friedländer, one of the leading historians and scientists in the field of Nazism and the Jewish genocide. His writings include the book When Memory Comes, describing how he experienced the war as a child in a convent school in France. Both of his parents died in Auschwitz. Filmmaker Frank Diamand takes Friedländer on a trip to places and images that are very important to the historian and to Diamand himself. Friedländer talks about his memories and motives and dwells on the debate he had in the 1980s with the German historian Martin Broszat, who wanted to describe Nazism as a ‘normal’ part of history. In response to Broszat’s convictions, Friedländer wrote his magnum opus Nazi Germans and the Jews, an integrated history of the Shoah.
