NFF Prof Talk: Simon Lereng Wilmont

Danish documentary director Simon Lering Wilmont will take you through his creative process during this inspiring Prof Talk about the trade of directing. His work has been praised for bringing the viewer close to the stories of young protagonists growing up in war zones. From showing genuine interest in your protagonists to filming with a small team; Simon explains how he gets close without being an intruder.

Simon Lereng Wilmont graduated from The National Danish Film School in 2009. Since then, his work has been selected and won awards at CPH:DOX, Sundance and IDFA. His most recent film, A House Made of Splinters, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2023. The film portrays the lives of children living in an orphanage in Ukraine's war zone. Earlier, Lereng Wilmont travelled to Ukraine to portray 10-year-old Oleg, who grows up with his grandmother with the increasingly threatening war in the background (The Distant Barking of Dogs).

Using excerpts, documentary directors Peter Lataster and Carine Bijlsma will talk to Simon about filming vulnerable protagonists and how to work with them in confidence.

In collaboration with Dutch Directors Guild (DDG).
