NFF Prof Talk: Oliver Coates

Oliver Coates constantly moves between the roles of composer, performer, experimental musician and record producer. As a result, he is in high demand for all kinds of projects, from mainstream to arthouse.

A versatile artist, Coates composes for film and television and has provided music for films such as The Stranger and Aftersun, both selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. He has collaborated with Steve McQueen on Occupied City and contributed to mainstream projects such as Significant Other for Paramount Plus.

Oliver Coates is a cellist, composer and producer of electronic music, working at the intersection of classical, ambient, and experimental soundscapes. In this Prof Talk, Coates will tell about how his background as principal cellist with ensembles such as Aurora Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta, is complemented by his deep involvement in electronic music, where he mixes classical precision with dance elements.
