Television film about a conductor staying abroad who returns to his homeland to conduct one performance of Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony.
On his arrival, the perfectionist conductor finds the concert hall in scaffolding. To his amazement, the building work continues during rehearsals. The rehearsal concentrates on the famous posthorn solo, that is supposed to sound wie aus weiter Ferne according to the score. Together with the posthorn soloist, the conductor sets of looking for the best place for the solo. This quest for perfection leads to bizarre situations. In the end he manages to find the right acoustic balance. But by then he has long lost any feeling for real proportions.
