Documentary about the last year in the existence of the Smalfilmmuseum. A portrait is given of the Netherlands from a not so distant past.
The Smalfilmmuseum is no more. It is now part of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Director Albert Elings made an homage to the collection that comprehends the Dutch collective memory. And to the restorers of the vulnerable material. He followed staff member Femke Harmsen in the final year of the museum's existence. Harmsen views and describes newly arrived amateur films on cine. The documentary captures the work in extreme, affectionate close-ups. Thus, based on the films Harmsen views, a portrait is given of the Netherlands from a not so distant past. The only comment is formed by fragments from the notes that Harmsen makes. This forms a connection with the images we see of her and her colleagues. They write, drink tea, drive home or to work and eventually switch off the equipment for the last time.
